Carved and glued the tail on today. Tomorrow add the feathers to the tail and detail the talons and fish.
Having fun with the feathers. I tried a new technique of dragging the tip in a u shape and I really like the effect it gives for the body and leg feathers. It looks natural yet random and active.
Defined the head and body today…
Defining the talons, fish and base. Trying to lighten this heavy red oak to make it easier to move around. It’s going on a 17” diameter stump, so the base will be carved to match it.
Little by little… it’s taking shape. The manpa multicutter is working great to concave these wings!
Feathers are the fun part on eagles. The bottom side will be tougher because of the curve. I will most likely reposition the log so I have easier access. The chain hoist is a big help for this.
I’ve got the wings added on. Now I can have some fun making them look good by refining the form and adding the feather pattern. I’m hoping create some convincing action with this piece.
Taking shape…
Getting this fat chunk of red oak ready for my next project. What is it? Here’s a challenging hint, it rhymes with legal.
A 5.5 ft. black bear for a big Baylor fan in TX. What a nice space for a carving! This bear style was inspired by a bear made by Jeff Mohr. It was my first time trying ears like this. I think they look more realistic this way. My son, Miciah, helped me out a lot on this one. Way to go Miciah! Thank you!

30 cherry seals with satin finish.
30 cherry 12” diameter town seals for Maiden, NC. Boy, I love the look of that cherry with the satin clear coat.
Another coat rack for a friend’s wedding. This was a collaboration. My friend turned the walnut pegs and I made the carved background. Finished with a satin clear coat.
Using the CNC router to help make 30 cherry town seals for the town of Maiden, NC
This 6 ft. dimensional sign is made from layers of weatherproof sign foam. The letters are gilded with real copper leaf. The bracket was custom made by a friend. This was made for the local Inn in our small town. The Sugar Maple Inn.
A fun sign for our local bakery. #thecopperkettlebakery
Had some fun with some wood scraps at a recent carving show.
Carving at the entrance of the Bristol Farm Expo this weekend. We had a great turn out yesterday. Come on by if you’re in the area.
Finished up these signs for a school in NYC.
