Finally finished drawing the paisley design on this bear. Now Miciah and I are plowing into this relief work and are really enjoying it. We’re using tear drop sabbur tooth bits and it’s like butter on this free form air epoxy. Lots of fun! Stay tuned!
How many hours have I been drawing on this bear!!!???
Miciah helped me install some bears in central Virginia.
Making progress drawing a paisley design on the entire surface of this 8 ft. bear. I am pulling some of the pattern elements off of photos and the rest I am making up. I used to spend hours doodling paisley designs on the edges of my notebook pages in school. It’s funny that here I am now getting paid to do this. Seriously?! Is this for real? And who would ever think this would be done on a giant bear of all things! Life is a wonderful journey. It’s the family and friends that make it wonderful, the paisley bears are just a little extra spice.
Ok, now the craziness begins. The entire surface of this 8 ft. bear is covered with an ornate paisley design! Then, after drawing this design, it is all carved about 3/4” deep into the surface using Dremels. Yes, it’s going to be a lot of detail work!
Some family time applying epoxy dough to the surface of this bear… it took 13 gallons of free form air epoxy!!

Making progress on the timberframe...
I think I’m finished with carving stage. This is a short hair dog so I’m not sure if it needs texture or not. What do you think? I think I’m going to want texture when the color goes on. Next, it goes in the kiln for a few days to stabilize the wood. This forces it to crack and allows me to fix the cracks before hand. Sycamore cracks are not fun to fix. White pine is much easier to fix because the cracks are straight and minimal. After the kiln, color goes on. Stay tuned!

Finishing up the face on this coon hound. Dog portraits take me a long time. I have to study the pictures every time I make a change to try to create a likeness. It’s a slow, tedious process, but hopefully in the end there is a satisfying likeness that the customer and I can sit back and enjoy.
