The fine folks at Silverback Distillery in Afton, VA (https://www.sbdistillery.com/) ordered a life-size silverback for their business.
We went with a weatherproof option: EPS foam covered in painted epoxy resin.
I started with a block of 3 lb. EPS foam, drew a 12″ grid and started transferring my sketch to the foam.
I used a hot wire to cut the profiles out, then moved to a chainsaw for the rest.
Once the carving was complete, I applied several coats of epoxy foam coat. I use Epsilon Pro from Smooth-On. I used
epoxy clay and taxidermy eyes to create realism in the eyes. Then it was ready for paint.
Below is a video showing the timelapse process. Enjoy!
