Abstract Organic Forms

This was a fun subject matter! I’m grateful for the times I get to take a break from realism and carve something non-objective/ abstract. (Wish it happened more often!!) These started off as Two 6 ft. poison ivy covered stumps matching in size and location, one on either side of the driveway. (Yuck!!!! I hate poison ivy!!!) I covered myself from head to toe to remove the ivy and debark the stumps. Once the poison ivy covered bark was removed, I could relax and focus on the carving.

Here are some designs I started with…

Stump #1

I can’t take any chances with breathing in poison ivy dust, so I went all out…

Roughed in the form…

Sanded and burned to add dramatic contrast…

Shots of both carvings…

Stump #1 finished…

Stump #2

Worked into the night one evening…

Stump #2 Finished

From the street…

Thankfully another happy customer…and only got a little poison ivy on my arms.

After the carvings were finished, one of the neigbors was so excited about it that she called the local NBC new channel and they came over and did an interview…
