I think I’m finished with carving stage. This is a short hair dog so I’m not sure if it needs texture or not. What do you think? I think I’m going to want texture when the color goes on. Next, it goes in the kiln for a few days to stabilize the wood. This forces it to crack and allows me to fix the cracks before hand. Sycamore cracks are not fun to fix. White pine is much easier to fix because the cracks are straight and minimal. After the kiln, color goes on. Stay tuned!
Some of my favorite bits arrived! #saburrtooth let the fun begin!!!
Finishing up the face on this coon hound. Dog portraits take me a long time. I have to study the pictures every time I make a change to try to create a likeness. It’s a slow, tedious process, but hopefully in the end there is a satisfying likeness that the customer and I can sit back and enjoy.
Getting closer...
Making progress on this hound dog...
Sycamore log. What do you think it’s going to be?
5 ft. black bear holding a solar lantern. Getting close to burning and oiling...
Onto the next one... 7 ft. white pine... stay tuned!
Here is a custom Yorki carving named Abby. She’s on her way to northern NY state. Carved in paulownia wood.
This is a sample of different bronze finishes applied to a paisley relief carving using epoxy putty, epoxy foam coat and 3 lb. eps foam. For a future project coming in February!!! Stay tuned!!!!
A honey cub.... I’ve been carving bears for 16 years and I still enjoy them. They’re always challenging and fun if I keep trying to get better at them. Thanks for looking!
Mama bear looking for her cubs...
Mama and cub are ready for delivery!
These Southwest Virginia bears are enthusiastic dancers as well! Very light on there feet (or paws I should say.)
Yee Haw! These Virginia bear rodeos are an amazing experience!
This carving barn is a dream come true. I am so grateful!
Finished shots!
This piece of walnut was taken from a tree that was cut down for a housing project. For decades, a local farmer’s wife would bring her husband lunch under the shade of this tree. It became a sacred place of rest and companionship for this sweet couple. This carving is a gift to them. A picture of a tractor and a truck under the shade of a faithful walnut tree. Carved from the actual tree. What a precious story. What a faithful love.
He’s ready to see his new home! Carved out of 3 lb. eps foam from Atlas Molded Products, with 3 coats of epsilon pro epoxy foam coat from Smooth-on, and painted with Sherwin Williams all surface enamel oil. Eyes are from McKenzie Taxidermy supply and face details created using Aves Apoxie Sculpt epoxy clay. Please get in touch if you would like a giant gorilla too!
Here are some texture tools I use when carving EPS foam. Let me know what you think or if you have other texturing suggestions.
