The Marriott Hotel chain is opening a new location in Breckenridge Colorado. Which happens to be my old stomping grounds as a kid. My family lived in Breckenridge until I was 9 ys. old so it holds a special place in my heart. The Hotel asked me to make them a pair of end tables for their lobby. I started with two red oak logs and carved some cubs coming out of them…For the table tops, I cut two crosscut slabs off of a large poplar log and used the CNC to flatten them. Then, I sanded them, filled major cracks and finished them with several coats of satin polyurethane.
Oxalic acid was used to turn the green poplar wood into a beautiful gold!
Next, the bears were burned and sanded and an oil wood preservative was applied to the carvings before the table tops were attached. The tops were screwed and glued to the bases using small L brackets.
Here they are finished with my friend, Frank, relaxing and enjoying a nice hot drink.
