A client in Connecticut contacted me about turning a large ash tree in his front yard into a landing red hawk. We decided it would be about 7.5′ tall and about 3′ wide. The design was based on the sketch I drew and a picture of a hawk I carved previously.
Getting set up on location…
The wings and tail needed pieces of wood (saved from the tree) added on to the main carving. I blocked out the body of the bird and shape of the stump he’s sitting on.
Next, I carved the feathers and burned the wing markings. Then I roughed out and refined the rest of the stump he’s sitting on – see the time lapse video at the end of the post for more on that process.
Stained and finished!

Most beautiful. I love hawks.
Just like the ones I have flying around in Brooklyn.
Once again, stunning work! Beautifully done, Kris!
I’m looking for somebody to carve me a owl on a tree I have left standing 7 feet tall
