A client located in Virginia contacted me in the spring about carving her 9′ tall white oak stump. She didn’t have any specific ideas in mind for the design, but wanted something that would add to the beauty of her property. We collaborated and ended up on a story-telling design with a few animals worked into the stump, rather than one static animal. We placed a hawk 9 feet up at the top of the stump, a shy owl a few feet down, and a fox circling the bottom of the tree. I love how engaging it is to view these multi-animal designs!
I traveled to the town and stayed in the area for a week while I carved.
Moving on to the owl and fox…
Stained and finished!

As always, beautiful work Kris!
Wow, what a wonderful idea and beautiful creation Kris.
Assuming it was a live tree and didn’t dry out- how likely is it that being outside and in the heat and cold that cracks will appear in short order? At the very least it seems it would need preservative treatment often.
