Eagle In Flight with Fish

A customer in Central Virginia reached out to me about getting an eagle carved for their home. They live on a lake, and see eagles around their property. The carving was originally going to be mounted outside on a stump, but they changed their mind and decided to keep it in the corner of the living room in a more protected environment.

I used a 3′ diameter red oak log and got to work carving the body. The wings and tails are add-ons.

Here, I’ve finished carving the eagle, but I had to kiln dry the whole carving. I set up a temporary kiln box with insulative foam, a dehumidifier, and fan. This helps to season the wood and force it to crack. This way I can fill the cracks before the customer gets it.

Finally, on to staining! I used Super Deck for the brown and Thompsons Water Seal as a clear on the lighter areas.
